Buy him a coffee

A new home to build

Buy the Croissant a coffee.

The Croissant, worried, holds out an empty glass under a street lamp. A cardboard sign beside him says HOME FUND.

He's broke. His glass is empty, and last night a paper bag was his bed. Buy him a coffee and you help build his new home and finish his song.

100 coffees and we draw the next 20 seconds of his song.

Watch him sing for it.

This is the first 20 seconds of his song, Still Golden. The rest is still pencil, because pencil is all he can afford. Every 100 coffees, we draw the next 20 seconds.

Every coffee adds to the wall of his new home. Pick a cup and watch your brick go in.

Know who you're helping.

BudsAlike began in Hong Kong as an app that matched people with restaurants by their own taste. The idea was no ads and no paid reviews, and a soft spot for small independent places. In 2021 HK01, EJ Tech and Headline Daily wrote about it, and it was one of the start-ups in CityU's HK Tech 300.

Since then the app has gone quiet and the team has moved on. I'm the founder, and I stayed. I'm rebuilding BudsAlike on my own, and the Croissant is the first one back.

That's who you're buying a coffee for.

The founder of BudsAlike

The earlier story and its press coverage are at budsneverstop.com.

Ask before you pour.

How do I get my priority preview?

Type your email at the checkout when you pay. If you pay with PayPal, we use your PayPal email. When the app is ready for its first visitors, we send your way in to that address. We use it for nothing else except news about the Croissant's home.

What happens at 100 coffees?

We draw the next 20 seconds of his music video and post it. Then the count starts again for the 20 seconds after that. A $5 pour counts as one coffee and $10 as two. The count on this page catches up about once an hour.

Where does my money go?

Into building BudsAlike, the app that will be the Croissant's new home, and into finishing his music video.

What is BudsAlike?

BudsAlike began in Hong Kong as an app that matched people with restaurants by their own taste. It is being rebuilt, and the Croissant and his friends will live in the new one. This page is how that starts.

Why does the checkout show a different name?

BudsAlike is still being built and has no payment account of its own yet, so the checkout runs on our founder's account. You'll see that name at the checkout, and a card payment shows on your statement as HTPI.ME.

Is this a charity donation or an investment?

Neither. It's a gift that helps us build. You get the thank-yous above, not shares, and it isn't tax-deductible.

Can I pour more than once?

Yes. Come back whenever his glass looks empty.
